Such a delicate and lovely story, even if the hearts cracks a bit at the end. I suppose that is the best you can hope for with love, sometimes.

Thank you, LQ.

I am grateful to get to keep something so sweet, just as it was, forever. I only wish I still had the token.

But you do still have it, and you just gave everyone who reads it a little piece of it. It is a very generous gift, and I bet if you close your eyes tight enough you will be able to feel the cold weight of it against your chest.

This is why I like you so much. 🫢🏻

I have my moments. Don’t tell anyone. I have a reputation to maintain.

I think everyone has one of these stories in us, even if it’s maybe just an old CD that we play from time to time (Tracy Chapman - Fast Car, anyone?). Beautifully written, I really enjoyed reading it.

Yes! I used to cover that song when I sang in a band a million years ago. What a gem.

Thank you so much for reading and letting me know you enjoyed it.

I had a St Christopher's medal just like that when I was a kid. I liked to think it brought me good luck.

It do be like that sometimes...

Very well written.

Mandy, what stayed with me most was the realization that this memoir isn't really about either Christopher. It's about the strange way memory chooses its anchors. A small medal becomes a vessel that carries innocence, longing, heartbreak, reunion, and ultimately the passage of an entire life. The refrain, "Always Christopher. Only Christopher." grows richer each time it returns, until it feels less like a name and more like a place the heart instinctively knows how to find.

I was especially moved by the moment when you offered the medal back after all those years, only for him to place it around your neck once again. In another writer's hands, that scene might have chased romance. You allowed it to become something gentler and, I think, more enduringβ€”a quiet acknowledgment that not every profound love is meant to become a lifelong partnership. Some people simply remain woven into the fabric of who we are, asking nothing more than to be remembered.

I'm happily subscribing because I love memoir that trusts memory more than melodrama. I write at The Reflective State, where I often explore the way places, objects, and chance encounters quietly accumulate meaning across the years until they reveal something unexpected about ourselves. If curiosity ever leads you there, I'd be delighted to have you visit and share your thoughts. I have a feeling you might especially enjoy Agapi Mou, Philemou, a reflection that also lingers on how certain people continue to inhabit our lives long after time has carried us elsewhere.

Bless you for reading and especially for such a beautiful, thoughtful comment!

You are totally right, of course. β€œβ€¦a quiet acknowledgement that not every profound love is meant to become a lifelong partnership.” Was beautifully stated.

Thank you, so much. I will absolutely come visit you.

I'm looking forward to future stories because this one was easy to read and heartfelt. A serious topic woven together with a bright thread, it made me feel for my own first love and then it made me smile. Wonderful, Mandy.

This is a gorgeous story. Some connections go deeper than what can ever come from a physical one.

Any chance of the medal turning back up?

Mandy | Greater Ape's avatar

Highly unlikely but every now and then a box I haven’t opened in ages will turn up and you never know.
